Delivers 10x storage performance improvement while providing integrated, multi-tier data protection for virtual desktops

FalconStor Software today announced FalconStor® Network Storage Server (NSS) SAN Accelerator for VMware View™, an SSD-enhanced storage solution that increases the performance of VMware virtual desktop environments while delivering integrated, multi-tier data protection. FalconStor NSS SAN Accelerator for VMware View performs backup and recovery for the entire virtual desktop environment and for each virtual desktop – and, for the first time, enables integrated self-service file recovery for individual virtual desktop users.

VMware View delivers tremendous efficiencies in the deployment and management of enterprise users’ desktop and laptop computers. Virtual desktop operation and management can be enhanced by storage capabilities to maximize performance, availability and efficiency. FalconStor NSS SAN Accelerator for VMware View dramatically enhances the efficiency of virtual desktop management throughout the virtual desktop lifecycle – accelerating virtual desktop booting, login, operation, logoff, patch/update and security management through 10x storage performance improvement.

Virtual desktop deployments also require advanced data protection and storage efficiency features for storing desktop images, user data and settings that need to be backed up and recoverable in the event of a system failure, user error or data center disaster. The FalconStor NSS SAN Accelerator for VMware View employs snapshots, thin clones, replication and file-level protection to enable a three-tier data protection service:

- entire VMware View environment – comprehensive, enterprise-class continuous data protection that allows IT managers to recover locally or from a DR site in the event of system-wide failure

- all VMware View user data repositories – complete data protection for user data located within the VMware View environment and redirected folders on a separate NAS appliance

- self-service file-level recovery – users can recover their own individual files as needed, saving storage administrators significant time and expense.

“Virtualization in general and virtualization of desktops in particular have amplified I/O unpredictably as read/write I/O storms occur frequently without warning; the only solution to date has been to add more disk drives,” said David Vellante, chief research advocate, Wikibon. “Wikibon has been emphasizing the requirement for different architectures to exploit the potential of flash to improve I/O performance. We are very pleased with the innovation that FalconStor has shown with its flash-on- storage-controller implementation, which is much more efficient for VDI than SSDs. The FalconStor NSS SAN Accelerator neatly exploits the VMware I/O separation improvements to offer a solution that combines low-cost SATA with 2 to 3 percent high-performance flash as a cache that can adapt in real-time. Wikibon believes this is a best-of-breed solution for high-performance workloads.”

“The rapidly adopted paradigm shift of virtual servers and desktops ushered in by VMware’s innovation has created the need for storage environments with integrated data protection designed for the new virtual data center,” said Jim McNiel, chief strategy officer for FalconStor. “Virtual environments not only demand flexible, scalable virtual storage environments, but also require backup and DR systems that work with the unique characteristics of virtual machines. We designed the FalconStor NSS SAN Accelerator for VMware View™ to deliver the kind of storage environment that virtual desktops require – improving performance and data protection in one elegant solution.”

Introducing FalconStor® Continuous Data Protector for Backup appliance

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Designed for SMB and ROBO markets in Europe, FalconStor EMEA targets outmoded traditional backup methods with integrated hardware/software appliance that delivers instant recovery

FalconStor Software, Inc. today announced FalconStor® Continuous Data Protector (CDP) for Backup, a hardware/software appliance designed to meet the particular needs of the small and-medium-size business (SMB) and remote office/branch office (ROBO) markets in Europe. FalconStor CDP for Backup provides simultaneous backup and data protection capabilities and addresses the serious deficiencies of traditional backup applications and outdated practices.

FalconStor CDP combines local and remote protection into a cost-effective, unified, disk-based solution that enables the recovery of data – and business operations – back to the most recent transaction. This is achieved by a process of continuous and simultaneous backup of all servers and applications. The concept of continuous backup to disk completely eliminates the anachronism of the backup window and dramatically increases the number of recovery points available, virtually eliminating the risk of data loss. There is a common management interface for the entire environment, and there are no removable media to manage.

The result is that the FalconStor CDP for Backup appliance makes backup simple, fast, affordable and reliable. It is also, in effect, a combined backup and disaster recovery (DR) solution that delivers instant recovery. For example, accidentally deleted or corrupted files can be retrieved in less than two minutes, a system recovered in just 10 minutes and entire remote DR sites can be brought on line in just half an hour.

Guillaume Imberti, vice president and general manager, EMEA operations, FalconStor

Guillaume Imberti

“The reality is that traditional backup software is an outmoded concept that only performs a single task – and not very well,” said Guillaume Imberti, vice president and general manager, EMEA operations, FalconStor. “Traditional backup techniques involve too many points of failure, too much opportunity for data loss and, in the SMB environment in particular, too much scope for human error.”

“FalconStor CDP for Backup addresses the backup requirements of SMBs, especially those with remote or branch offices, more effectively and – crucially – more simply than any other solution. Through the unique combination of capabilities, flexibility, simplicity and effectiveness, we aim to overcome the natural hesitation that often stops companies from commissioning a robust, modern, fit-for-purpose backup solution,” Imberti explains.

About FalconStor CDP for Backup
FalconStor® Continuous Data Protector (CDP) technology reinvents how data is backed up and recovered. Moving far beyond failure-prone once-a-day tape backup models, FalconStor CDP combines local and remote protection into a cost-effective, unified, disk-based solution that enables the recovery of data back to the most recent transaction. Recovery point objectives (RPO) shrink to mere seconds.

But protection is only part of the solution. FalconStor CDP for Backup delivers fast, reliable recovery, bringing business back online sooner. Using a wealth of sophisticated technologies – including application integration, physical-to-virtual recovery, and WAN-optimized replication – entire systems can be restored in under 10 minutes. Lost files can be recovered in two minutes. And all of this can occur without the need to touch backup software or run a “restore job.” Data is protected in its native format and instantly accessible. Recovery time objectives (RTO) change from hours to minutes, minimizing system downtime and economic impact.

FalconStor offers “instant margin” to resellers taking on SMB virtualisation projects

Monday, May 10th, 2010

FalconStor today introduced a low-priced virtualisation promotion in order to increase reseller margins on smaller virtualisation projects.

“Virtualisation starts to make sense as soon as a company reaches just three physical servers,” explains Philippe Bruiant, director of channel sales operations, FalconStor EMEA. “And, when you consider how common it is to have a file server, print server, email server, network server or a database server, that actually means a heck of a lot of businesses.”

“However, many of these businesses will not be interested in zero downtime, or fault tolerance, or disaster recovery. Consequently, projects for this sort of customer tend to be of low value, generating low margins for resellers – and this makes them unattractive projects. This highly competitive offer is for resellers that are willing to virtualise the servers and storage of customers with limited requirements and provides the resellers with ‘instant margin’,” Bruiant said.

Until June 15th, the FalconStor® Network Storage Server (NSS) Virtual Appliance with a one terabyte storage capacity license is priced at €800, a reduction of €400, on proof of purchase of a VMware vSphere™ 4 Essentials Bundle. VMware is currently offering its vSphere™ 4 Essentials Bundle at US$495 instead of US$995. Products are available from VMware- and FalconStor-accredited channel partners respectively. FalconStor and Violin deliver the first SAN-based solid state storage solution to simultaneously accelerate application reads and writes as well as general SAN performance

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

New FalconStor NSS SAN Accelerator doubles overall SAN performance
at a fraction of the cost of conventional disk storage solutions

FalconStor Software and Violin Memory today announced the first flash-memory-based storage system that simultaneously accelerates reads and writes for mission-critical applications as well as general SAN performance. The FalconStor® NSS SAN Accelerator doubles SAN performance, delivering high-speed access to stored data with minimal latency, at a fraction of the cost of conventional solutions.

The FalconStor NSS SAN Accelerator combines the FalconStor® Network Storage Server (NSS) Gateway, a Violin 1010 Flash Memory Appliance and FalconStor’s storage management software to create a virtual SAN out of new or existing storage resources while introducing a solid state memory array as a caching platform for all application data requiring the fastest input/output (I/O). The integrated solution uses an economical amount of solid state storage as a caching platform. Lab tests of the FalconStor NSS SAN Accelerator conducted by FalconStor show that a solid-state layer of one percent of a SAN’s total storage capacity will increase overall SAN performance greater than 100 percent.

“Our evaluation of the FalconStor NSS SAN Accelerator proved that it can significantly enhance storage response time and underload scalability,” said George Crump, founder of Storage Switzerland. “The interesting capability of this system is that it can be deployed into an existing SAN and yield impressive improvements in performance and scalability at a reasonable cost.”

“There are no other solutions on the market today that can yield as much performance enhancement out of a modest investment in a solid state tier of a virtualized SAN,” said Fadi Albatal, vice president of marketing for FalconStor. “FalconStor’s innovative storage management software intelligently and predictably accelerates reads and writes to the SAN on a global basis and is not exclusive to an application or a specific storage segment.”

FalconStor’s SafeCache™ and HotZone® features for Write/Read Acceleration
FalconStor NSS SAN Accelerator speeds up both writes and reads with two unique capabilities of Falconstor storage management software: SafeCache™ and HotZone® features. FalconStor’s SafeCache capability allows a segment of the solid state memory array to be devoted to application writes so that all disk writes can be received and acknowledged with low latency. The data is then written transparently to the destination storage volumes on the SAN.

FalconStor’s HotZone capability accelerates the read process of specific applications, including random-access databases, and general SAN I/O by monitoring disk access patterns and then intelligently copying the hot data to a HotZone cache on the solid state memory array for faster read access. When the data is no longer heavily used, the data is deleted from the cache and referenced back to its original location in the SAN to make room for other highly active datasets.

About the Violin 1010 Flash Memory Appliance
The Violin 1010 is a four-terabyte enterprise-class flash appliance that provides sustainable performance with sub-100uS deterministic latency and serviceability (including automatic active sparing and hot swap of flash modules). Based on patent-pending flash RAID algorithms, the Violin 1010 provides enterprise data centers with performance and reliability at a lower cost than any traditional performance storage systems with solid state disks (SSD). To achieve a 100 percent performance boost, it is more than three times less expensive to add a solid state memory cache with the FalconStor NSS SAN Accelerator than it is to upgrade a SAN with additional disk arrays.

“Violin Memory is dedicated to developing the fastest, most reliable and economical solid state memory solutions for the enterprise market,” said Matt Barletta, vice president of product marketing for Violin Memory. “Solid state as a consumer technology has been around for a while, but we are now showing the many ways that scalable solid state memory arrays can revolutionize traditional enterprise storage methods and business practices. Together with FalconStor, we are providing customers with application acceleration options and flexibility never before available.”

About FalconStor FDS
FalconStor FDS offers block-level deduplication of backup data via a simple file interface. FalconStor FDS extends the company´s highly scalable data deduplication technology – already widespread as part of the industry-leading FalconStor® Virtual Tape Library (VTL) solution – to network-attached storage (NAS) disk-to-disk backup environments. With built-in many-to-one replication capability, the file-interface system provides global deduplication by replicating from remote sites to a central data repository across the wide-area network.
